Generator is an important Electrical machines it is classified as AC & DC generator.
A DC machine is an electro-mechanical energy conversion device. When it converts mechanical power into DC electrical power, it is known as a DC generator. For general purpose battery is an important source of DC electric power, but it can supply limited power. There are some applications where large quantity of DC power is required (such as in chemical and metal extraction plants, for electroplating and electrolysis processes etc.), at such places DC generators are used to deliver power.
Definition :
An electro-mechanical energy conversion device (or electrical machine) that converts mechanical energy or power into DC electrical energy or power is called DC generator.
Working principle :
The basic principle of a DC generator is electro-magnetic induction i.e.,
Construction :
It consists of a single loop of wire rotating about a fixed axis. The rotating part of this machine is called the rotor, and the stationary part is called the stator.
The magnetic field for the machine is supplied by the magnetic north and south poles shown on the stator in Figure
Working :
It consists a stator and rotor, stator has a field windings which supplied by externally, due to that strong magnetic field generated in side the generator. When rotor of generator is driven by mechanical components like turbine, the rotor conductors cut the magnetic field due to, that emf is generated in armature conductors. That emf is alternating in nature it convert in DC by using Commutator and brushes mechanism.
